Casablanca Court Delays High-Profile Murder Trial of ’Rich Kid’ Accused in Doctoral Student’s Death

The Casablanca Court of Appeal decided on Wednesday to postpone the examination of the murder case of Badr Bouljouahel, the 23-year-old doctoral student killed at the end of July 2023 as he was leaving a restaurant in Aïn Diab in Casablanca.
The main defendant, Achraf. S. nicknamed "Oueld Fchouch (rich kid)", will be heard again on October 1st. This is the decision of the court. A postponement requested by the new lawyer of the accused who asked for additional time to review the file. Another reason, the public prosecutor’s office at the Court of Appeal stressed the need for the presence of witnesses who are continuing their studies abroad in order to continue the examination of the case.
The court of first instance had sentenced the main defendant to death, for having run over the young man with his car after physically assaulting him in the restaurant parking lot. Another defendant, Amine. R, had also been sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in this premeditated murder and aggravated theft. Abderrafik. Z, on the other hand, was sentenced to 25 years in prison, while Ahmed. S, received 20 years in prison. As for Hamid A., the main defendant’s brother-in-law, he was sentenced to five years in prison for having helped the defendants flee to the city of Laâyoune before being arrested.
In addition to the custodial sentences, the defendants were ordered to pay 500,000 dirhams in damages to the victim’s parents, 100,000 dirhams to his sisters, and 30,000 dirhams to the other civil parties.
