Moroccan Man Faces 12-Year Sentence for Alleged Marital Rape in Seville

Twelve years in prison. This is the sentence requested by the Seville prosecutor’s office against a Moroccan accused of raping his wife, who is used to suffering his "continuous physical and verbal attacks."
The public prosecutor is demanding 9 years in prison against AES for the crime of sexual assault with aggravation of kinship, 2 years for regular ill-treatment, 1 year for violation of precautionary measures, and two restraining orders.
According to the prosecutor, the events took place on February 27, 2017 around 2 a.m., at the couple’s home, located near the San Pablo airport. The defendant wanted to have intimate relations with his wife, who refused because she was menstruating.
"Angry, and in an aggressive tone," the defendant tells his wife: "You’re always on your period; you have to do what I tell you." He then pushed her so hard that the young woman fell to the ground, before forcibly taking her to the bedroom, where he sexually assaulted her.
Following these events, which forced the victim to go to the Virgen del Rocío hospital on February 28, the Seville court in charge of violence against women issued a restraining order against the defendant. But after a few days, he returned to the family home and resumed living with his wife and two daughters.
According to the prosecutor’s provisional conclusions file, the woman, married to the defendant since 2012, has lived a married life punctuated by "insults, beatings and injuries, and has suffered all kinds of violence, especially during intimate relations."
A relationship "based on the use of permanent physical and verbal violence," estimates the Comprehensive Assessment Unit for Gender-Based Violence (UVIVG), which was unable, however, to determine whether the young woman was suffering from any after-effects.
