Moroccan Expats Seek King’s Intervention After Election Exclusion

The Coordination of Representatives of Moroccan Political Parties Abroad deplores the exclusion of Moroccans living abroad from the upcoming elections. It now counts on the arbitration of King Mohammed VI.
The coordination issued a special communiqué to express itself on the majority vote in the House of Representatives, which led to the blocking of the amendment authorizing Moroccans residing abroad (MRE) to participate directly in the next legislative elections. This vote "contradicts the clear royal instructions contained in the speeches of November 6, 2005 and November 6, 2007 and constitutes a blatant violation of Article 17 of the Constitution," it denounces.
"The refusal of Parliament to allow Moroccans abroad to be represented and to vote is a complete denial of the political and moral commitment on the part of the government, parliamentary groups and party secretaries," it affirms, recalling that Morocco has "chosen legislative balance".
However, it expects the deliberation, by the House of Councilors, of law 04-21 to respond "to the civic aspirations of Moroccans of the world in a Morocco that embraces all its citizens". The Coordination of Representatives of Moroccan Political Parties Abroad also calls for a royal arbitration so that the Moroccan community living abroad obtains the rights to vote and to be eligible.
