Moroccan Expats Banking Savings Hit Record 222.8 Billion Dirhams
Money transfers tell only part of the story. At the end of 2025, savings held by Moroccans from around the world in Kingdom institutions reach an unprecedented level and now represent a considerable fraction of individual bank deposits.
Moroccans living abroad held 222.8 billion dirhams in Moroccan banks at the end of December 2025, according to Bank Al-Maghrib’s annual report.

This amount must be compared to the 947.3 billion dirhams deposited by all individuals, residents and expats combined. Moroccans from around the world thus concentrate nearly 23.5% of this bank savings. In other words, almost one dirham in four deposited by individuals belongs to an expat.
The expat portfolio is also significantly higher than the sums transferred to Morocco during 2025 alone. These reached 122 billion dirhams, up 2.6%. However, the two figures do not measure the same thing: transfers correspond to an annual flow, while the 222.8 billion represents money still present in accounts at year-end.
Nearly 38 Billion More Since 2019
The banking weight of Moroccan expats has strengthened over the years. Their deposits stood at 184.8 billion dirhams in 2019, then 185.3 billion in 2021 and 203.5 billion in 2023. They have therefore increased by nearly 38 billion dirhams in six years, a growth exceeding 20%.
This trend is part of a broader increase in bank deposits in Morocco. Those of individuals grew 6% in 2025. Their sight deposits increased 8.4% and their savings accounts 2.7%, while term deposits fell 5.7%. Bank Al-Maghrib does not, however, provide this breakdown for expats alone.

These figures show that the contribution of Moroccans from around the world is not limited to transfers used immediately by their families. A significant portion of their money remains invested in the Moroccan banking system, in the form of available funds, savings or term deposits.
