Transfers from Moroccans living abroad are continuing their upward trend. Over the first four months of 2026, they reached nearly 40 billion dirhams, according to data compiled by Bank Al-Maghrib.

Moroccans living abroad continue to strongly support the national economy. According to the latest weekly indicators from Bank Al-Maghrib, which compile data from the Exchange Office, transfers from MREs reached 39.979 billion dirhams by the end of April 2026.

Over the same period last year, these transfers amounted to 36.426 billion dirhams. The increase therefore reaches 9.8% in one year, or more than 3.5 billion additional dirhams sent to Morocco.

MREs remain a financial pillar

This progression confirms the weight of Moroccans worldwide in the country’s external balances. Their money transfers remain one of Morocco’s main sources of foreign currency, alongside tourism revenues and exports.

Travel receipts have also progressed strongly. They reached 44.392 billion dirhams over the first four months of 2026, compared to 36.612 billion a year earlier, an increase of 21.2%. These two items, tourism and MRE transfers, continue to play an important role in the country’s foreign exchange reserves.

This dynamic occurs despite a more mixed external context. The trade deficit widened by 18.4% by the end of April, reaching 127.045 billion dirhams. Imports increased by 12.7%, to 295.901 billion dirhams, while exports rose by 8.7%, to 168.856 billion.

Official reserve holdings remain well-oriented, however. By the end of April, they stood at 469.8 billion dirhams, equivalent to 5 months and 24 days of imports of goods and services. A level supported by the growth in MRE transfers and tourism revenues.
