Moroccan Engineer Leads OCP’s Green Energy Push for Carbon Neutrality by 2040

Executive Director of the Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP), Hanane Mourchid puts her experiences and expertise at the service of sustainable development. She makes environmental protection her battle horse and intends to make her Moroccan fertilizer company carbon neutral by 2040.
Being a woman in a male-dominated sector is not an easy task. Yet Hanane Mourchid is making her way, even if the challenge to be met remains daily. "It’s the fact that many people think that it’s a field reserved for men and that women don’t necessarily have their place there," she describes before adding that fortunately many women around them are fighting against this kind of vision. Moreover, the OCP is taking action against exclusion in its activities. This justifies that today 30% of its executives are women and they represent 60% of its new recruits in mining and chemical facilities, reports euronews.
Since her appointment as Executive Director of Sustainability and Green Development within the OCP group, she is putting all her skills at the service of the fight against environmental pollution. "I also started to be aware of the effects of climate change; today, we are starting to see a reality and real effects on the ground," she said.
For her, the OCP is more than committed to sustainable development. "For us, our mission is planetary, it serves humanity, by working for food security, etc. We have invested a lot to make sustainable development a central element of our strategy." The Office Chérifien des Phosphates has invested heavily in recent years in technology and innovation such as desalination and wind and solar energy in order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.
"Innovation is very important so that technologies are up to the challenges: we know how to produce green hydrogen, but we don’t yet have the model to scale it up and power it with clean energy all day long, because we have to deal with the intermittency of solar, wind, and others," she said.
