Morocco Emerges as Top Contender in Global Renewable Energy Rankings

Morocco is positioning itself as a global leader in renewable energy. At least, that’s what the Policy Center for the New South (PCNS) think tank claims.
In a policy brief titled "The green hydrogen market: the industrial equation of the energy transition", the Policy Center for the New South (PCNS) points out that with its proactive policy, Morocco has carried out major solar and wind renewable energy projects, which have enabled it to position itself as a global leader in this sector.
Based on the latest Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index (RECAI) report, the Moroccan think tank also states that Morocco has topped the adjusted index thanks to its ambitious plans for solar, wind and more recently green hydrogen, in pursuit of a 52% share of green energy by 2030.
This new dynamic is notably explained by the implementation of the guidelines of King Mohammed VI. During the working meeting devoted on November 22, 2022 to the development of renewable energies and the new perspectives in this field, he had instructed to develop, as soon as possible, an operational and incentive "Moroccan Offer" covering the entire value chain of the green hydrogen industry in the kingdom.
Thus, the sovereign was presented on December 3, 2022 with a very ambitious green investment project of nearly $13 billion over the period (2023-2027) by Mostafa Terrab, CEO of the Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP) Group, which should ultimately power its entire industrial tool with green energy. The OCP Group intends to invest in seawater desalination (560 million m3), as well as the production of 1 million tons of green ammonia, to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.
