Moroccan Diaspora Surge Expected at Motril Port for Eid al-Adha Travel

During the first five days of the 2023 Operation Crossing the Strait (OPE), the port of Motril welcomed nearly 2,000 passengers and more than 600 vehicles. Motril has also reopened its link with Tangier, in addition to the existing destinations of Melilla, Al Hoceima and Nador.

According to the sub-delegation of the government in Granada, the forecasts for OPE 2023 suggest an increase in the flow of passengers and vehicles compared to 2022. Last year, around 100,000 passengers and nearly 23,000 vehicles had crossed the port of Granada. This year, the activity between Motril and the four ports should welcome many more passengers.

During the Marhaba operation, the number of weekly rotations should reach 21, a number that could increase depending on demand. With a weekly capacity of over 43,000 passengers and nearly 19,000 vehicles, this translates to an average of around 6,170 people and 2,680 vehicles per day, round trip.

The OPE, which began on June 15, is entering a critical phase, coinciding with the dates preceding Eid al-Adha. To cope with this period of high influx, a Provincial Coordination Committee met at the Port Authority of Motril. The goal: to guarantee the normal flow of vehicles and passengers. In addition, the port of Motril has made several improvements to better serve the thousands of passengers passing through it. These include the installation of a pedestrian bridge and the development of a new temporary goods storage area.
