Moroccan Diaspora Outraged as New Election Law Excludes Overseas Voters

The coordination of representatives of political parties abroad deplores the absence of voting rights and representation of Moroccans in the diaspora in the draft law amending the organic law relating to the House of Representatives. Rights that have nevertheless been claimed.

Big disappointment for Moroccans residing abroad (MRE). They bitterly noted that the recommendations they had made were not taken into account in the draft amending the organic law relating to the House of Representatives, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. The coordination of representatives of Moroccan political parties abroad regrets this deaf ear to the political and civil dynamics of Moroccans in the world, who have worked with moderation, balance and wisdom for the implementation of the constitutional principles relating to the right of Moroccans in the diaspora to political participation, indicates a press release.

Furthermore, the coordination deplores the status quo and the lack of interaction with its memorandum in favor of the voting right and representation of MREs filed last January. This memorandum has moreover received the assent of the political parties during a meeting. According to the coordination, the absence of the right to vote and representation of MREs from the draft laws adopted during the last Council of Ministers questions the Moroccan democratic experience. It states that this exclusion of Moroccans in the world from direct contribution in the management of public affairs weakens the link of the diaspora with their country of origin, and could consequently have a negative impact on future generations.
