Moroccan Border Closure Strands Hundreds, Spain Assists with Repatriation

The health cordon set up by the Moroccan authorities has created a chaotic situation at all the country’s border posts. In Melilla, nearly 200 Moroccan nationals, on board about sixty vehicles, were denied access to the national territory.
Their cry of distress was not enough to open the Beni Nsar crossing point, closed at the same time as Tarajal, as part of the national health policy aimed at curbing the Coronavirus epidemic.
The Spanish authorities have decided, exceptionally, to negotiate with the shipping companies the repatriation of the 200 Moroccan citizens to their starting points. 40 vehicles were transported to Almeria and 20 others to Malaga.
For their part, the local authorities of the city of Cadiz have announced that a dozen Moroccans, coming from Italy, are still blocked due to the suspension of maritime links between the two countries.
To this end, the municipality of Algeciras has decided to place the Moroccan transit passengers in quarantine, to avoid the risk of virus transmission within the city’s population.
