Surge in Moroccan Avocado Imports Drives Spanish Prices Down 29%

Valencian avocado producers complain about the massive importation of Moroccan avocados, which has caused a drop in the prices of their products this season.
Due to the increase in avocado imports from Morocco, the price of avocados in the Valencia region, particularly the most planted variety, Lamb Hass, has fallen by more than 29% this season, dropping from an average of 2.44 euros/kg in March 2024 to only 1.73 euros/kg in March 2025, denounces Unió Llauradora, a producers’ organization.
According to the latest data, Spanish avocado imports increased by 68% in January 2025. Imports from Morocco recorded an increase of 89%, totaling 14,187 tons of avocados. Peru and Chile, the two other countries supplying avocados to Spain, are currently in their off-season and their data are not to be considered.
In 2024, the Iberian Peninsula imported a total of 262,071 tons of avocados, representing an 8% increase compared to the previous year. In addition to imports, producers are calling for increased controls in avocado growing areas during harvest to reduce thefts observed during this period.
Unió Llauradora believes that avocado is an emerging crop in the Valencian Community and that authorities should support local producers to make their investments fruitful. The organization also invites consumers to opt for local avocados to support local production and protect the environment, particularly by reducing the carbon footprint resulting from imports.
