The Moroccan army activates its "iron dome" of the desert
Morocco now has an active air defense coverage. The Barak MX system, acquired from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), is fully operational. Its activation has been confirmed by the detection of electronic signatures via satellite.
Delivered gradually since 2023, this device allows the Kingdom to secure its airspace against a multitude of threats. The Barak MX is a modular system capable of intercepting targets (aircraft, helicopters, drones, cruise and ballistic missiles) within a radius of up to 150 kilometers.
According to information reported by Israeli media, this deployment responds to a strategic need for protection, particularly over the southern provinces. It aims to counter modern air threats, including the proliferation of drones and loitering munitions used in asymmetric conflict zones.
The operationalization of the Barak MX is part of an increased military cooperation between Rabat and Tel Aviv. Beyond the acquisition of equipment, this partnership now extends to local production. Last November, the Israeli manufacturer BlueBird Aero Systems inaugurated a production unit for kamikaze drones (SpyX) in Benslimane, marking a step towards Morocco’s industrial autonomy in the defense sector.
