Air Defense: Morocco Activates its "Dome" with Barak MX Missiles

The Sidi Yahya el-Gharb base is now home to the first Barak-8 MX launchers. This next-generation system locks down Moroccan airspace against missiles and drones, fulfilling a $500 million contract with Israel for comprehensive protection of the territory.

Images revealed by military experts confirm the strategic deployment northeast of Rabat. The air defense base now houses the mobile launchers of the Barak MX, marking a major technological leap. This system offers a circular coverage capable of intercepting threats at altitudes above 35 kilometers, securing the national airspace against hostile intrusions.

The technology delivered by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is based on a modular firepower. The system integrates a unified command center and active array radars guiding vertical truck-mounted launchers. Its four types of interceptors (MRAD, LRAD, ER and EA) neutralize targets located between 35 and 250 kilometers. This digital architecture allows simultaneous processing of drones, fighter jets, cruise missiles and tactical ballistic missiles thanks to extreme maneuverability.

This shield is part of a broader industrial cooperation. Beyond this $500 million contract signed in 2022, the Kingdom is launching local production of Harop drones through two new industrial units. The alliance with Tel Aviv also extends to space: Amir Peretz’s visit in July 2024 validated the purchase of the Ofek satellite for $1 billion. This new equipment will replace the current French systems, strengthening Rabat’s strategic autonomy in the face of the movements of Russian and Iranian networks in the Sahel.
