Defense: Morocco acquires the most advanced air-to-air missiles from the United States
The U.S. Department of Defense officially announced this week the notification of the sale of the latest generation of air-to-air missiles to the Royal Moroccan Air Force. This contract, estimated at over $88 million, aims to equip the Moroccan fleet with high-precision interception capabilities to strengthen regional security.
This transaction involves the acquisition of thirty AIM-120C-8 missiles, the most advanced version of medium-range air-to-air missiles (AMRAAM). The sales proposal, led by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, also includes guidance sections, telemetry kits, and a significant logistics and technical support component. All the equipment will be produced by RTX Corporation in Arizona and financed by Moroccan national funds, marking a new step in the modernization of the Kingdom’s military arsenal.
The integration of these cutting-edge munitions is directly linked to the operation of Morocco’s new fleet of F-16 Block 72 aircraft. According to U.S. authorities, this sale supports U.S. foreign policy by strengthening a major non-NATO ally, considered a pillar of political stability in North Africa. The stated objective is to enable Morocco to secure its borders and territorial waters while increasing its capabilities in the fight against terrorism and illicit trafficking.
From a strategic standpoint, Washington emphasizes that this technological contribution will not fundamentally alter the military balance in the region. The AIM-120C-8 missiles, capable of engaging multiple targets in all weather conditions, offer increased resistance to electronic countermeasures. This sale confirms the United States’ confidence in Morocco’s ability to protect sensitive military technologies, ensuring the country the operational superiority necessary for its national defense missions.
