Moroccan Airports Expansion: Tangier and Agadir Growth Plans 2026

After Casablanca-Mohammed V and Marrakech-Menara, other Moroccan airports are preparing to scale up. The provisional market program for 2026 of the National Airport Authority reveals several major operations at Tangier-Ibn Batouta and Agadir-Al Massira.

These projects do not all fall into the same category. Some concern heavy infrastructure, others technical equipment, energy, baggage handling or systems related to air operations. But they reflect the same trend: Morocco is preparing its regional platforms to absorb more traffic and operate to higher standards.

In Tangier, the program provides for the development of aeronautical infrastructure, road networks and various utilities at Ibn Batouta airport. This market, scheduled for open tender in the second quarter of 2026, directly concerns the airport’s capacity to support the growth of its activity. The Tangier platform occupies a strategic position, both for connections with Europe, MREs from northern Morocco and the region’s economic ecosystem.

Tangier strengthens baggage, networks and energy

Tangier-Ibn Batouta airport is also involved in a very concrete project for travelers: the supply and installation of a baggage handling system.

The program also mentions an extension of the airport’s drainage network, as well as the development of electrical power at the new Tangier-Ibn Batouta terminal. These operations are less visible to passengers, but they are essential to prepare the infrastructure for more intense and reliable operations.

Air navigation is also involved. ONDA plans the supply, installation and commissioning of a secondary MSSR Mode-S radar station at Tangier-Ibn Batouta airport, for approach and en route radar control needs. Again, the project is part of a logic of securing and modernizing air operations.

In Agadir, the projects are equally structuring. The program provides for the extension of the movement area of Agadir-Al Massira airport. This zone, essential for aircraft movements on the ground, directly determines the operational capacity of the platform. An extension of the movement area can help better manage aircraft flows, particularly during periods of high tourist activity.

Agadir airport is also involved in the development of electrical power at the new terminal. The program also mentions the supply and upgrading of lighting beacons and lighting of maneuvering areas.

Agadir prepares its tourist role

For Agadir, the stakes are clear. The city wants to consolidate its role as a major tourist destination in southern Morocco. Al Massira airport is therefore an important lever to support international arrivals, seasonal flights, low-cost connections and traffic related to holidays for Moroccans living abroad.

Taken together, these projects show that Moroccan airport modernization is not limited to the major symbols that are Casablanca-Mohammed V and Marrakech-Menara. Tangier and Agadir are also moving forward, but on often less visible projects: networks, energy, baggage, movement areas, lighting and navigation equipment.
