Montbéliard Sees Rise in Births; Hamza and Selma Remain Top Baby Names

Just like in 2020, Hamza and Selma occupy the top spot in the ranking of the most attributed names to baby boys and girls born in Montbéliard (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region), a city that has seen an increase in births.
In Montbéliard, 281 births were reported to the town hall of the Cité des Princes in 2021 against 245 in 2020. Parents gave the same names as those attributed to newborns in 2020, notes L’Est républicain.
For boys, Hamza (6) which, in the Muslim religion, is the uncle of the prophet Mohammad and means "strong and powerful" takes first place, followed by Mohamed (5) and Amir and Naël (3). For girls, Selma (of dual Arab and Germanic origin), which symbolizes peace and divine protection, tops the list with Aïssa and Amélia.
Among the most attributed names are also the simple names composed of two syllables Gabin (2), Côme (2), Emma (2), Lina (2) and Tiago (2).
