Monaco’s Ben Seghir Sets Sights on Champions League and World Cup Glory with Morocco
In an interview, Moroccan attacking midfielder Eliesse Ben Seghir reveals the dreams he intends to fulfill with the Atlas Lions for Morocco as well as with AS Monaco.
Eliesse Ben Seghir’s dream is to win the Champions League with Monaco, or the Ligue 1 title. "These are titles that make you dream," he said in an interview with Téléfoot TF1. He also dreams of the Ballon d’Or. "I think it’s a dream that everyone has in mind. Some are afraid to say it, or afraid to think about it, but not me," he assured. The young striker of the Atlas Lions also says he dreams of winning "more collective trophies like an African Cup of Nations with (his) country, or a World Cup."
Ben Seghir discussed his choice to defend the colors of the Moroccan flag over France, where he played in all the youth teams. "When the Moroccan A team calls you, especially the coach who calls you several times to talk to you about the selection, to explain to you how it works, it was an obvious choice for me," he explained. For the 19-year-old player, wearing the green and red jersey is also a way for him to pay tribute to his deceased father. "I think about it all the time every time I wear the jersey," he added.
Talented player, Ben Seghir is setting the counters on fire. He has already scored six goals and provided four assists this season. "I’m a player who likes to give pleasure, who likes to dribble, who likes to give passes, who likes to score goals and who also likes to make my teammates play," he described himself. The Monegasque assures that he is passionate about football: "For me it remains a passion, although it is my job. It was a childhood dream to turn professional, and today, I have succeeded. I am very proud and very happy about it."
The Moroccan player also revealed that he was "two fingers away" from signing with Olympique de Marseille but had ultimately preferred to join ASM. "When AS Monaco calls you, it’s hard to refuse," he explained. However, he did not make this choice alone. His family also had "a big impact on this choice," he added, stressing that he "does not regret it today."
