Modernization of Sebta Border Aims to Boost Security and Efficiency

The modernization process of the Tarajal border is progressing rapidly. The work on the second phase is progressing normally and a third phase is announced in order to make the border "safer" and "more fluid".

The period of closure of the Tarajal border has been used by the Ministry of the Interior to carry out modernization work on the customs post in order to strengthen control and effectively fight drug trafficking.

A first phase of the work has already been completed, the second is underway and a third is announced. This last phase "includes the majority of the modernization and improvement actions of the services and facilities of the said border, including the developments for the benefit of the Civil Guard and the National Police," indicate sources from the central administration to El Faro de Ceuta.

Specifically, the third phase includes the paving and signage of the entire border environment, the installation of two small awnings to protect the agents of the National Police from the sun and rain, the creation of a vehicle inspection area, and the rehabilitation of the main building and its metal frame.

"All this work is being carried out to ensure a more fluid and secure border and to facilitate the work of the agents of the security forces and bodies who provide services there, pending the completion of the work to locate a health post," the same sources specify.

The work already completed, at a total cost of 125,500 euros, concerns the construction of 12 office modules for processing international protection applications, as well as three toilets and two waiting rooms.

The rehabilitation of the customs facilities cost 481,485 euros in 2020, which was used to replace the locksmithing at the pedestrian entrance and exit points, and to renovate the building housing the dependencies of the National Police and the Civil Guard.
