Mental Health Crisis Strains Marrakech as Homeless Individuals Populate Streets

Many mentally ill people wander the streets of Marrakech. A real headache for both the local authorities and the merchants.

For a few weeks now, mentally ill people have been settling in the streets of the ochre city. They are seen in the areas around the transport infrastructure, especially the exit of the Marrakech train station, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. The managers who ensure their management do not know how to solve this problem. These mentally ill people are also present in tourist areas. Merchants are getting used to their presence, some of them are not aggressive.

Some Marrakchis have complained to the local authorities. The latter have asked associative structures that had dealt with other subjects so far to provide their support. Insufficient support, given the number of mentally ill people wandering the streets of the ochre city. Many associations that are involved in the support and care of these people lack the infrastructure to help the city solve this societal problem.

The proliferation of the mentally ill would be linked to the closure of "Bouya Omar", a center, which until a few years ago housed patients with mental illnesses, and the non-implementation of the "Karama" project, the realization of which would make it possible to offer an adequate framework for the care of the mentally ill.
