Melilla Port Crisis: Spanish Officials Seek Solutions Amid Morocco Border Closure

The Melilla government delegation held a meeting on Tuesday with the president of the State Ports, Álvaro Rodríguez Dapena. On the agenda, the situation of the port of Melilla since the closure of the border with Morocco.
The meeting made it possible to analyze the situation of freight and passenger traffic at the port of Melilla since the closure of the border with Morocco and to request the support of the State Ports to guarantee its viability and survival, the government delegation of Melilla said in a press release.
During this meeting, Sabrina Moh, the delegate of Melilla, stressed the need to give a prominent place to the port of Melilla in the overall plan that the Ministry of Territorial Policy is developing and, more generally, to work to strengthen the city’s tourism potential.

In this perspective, modernization work on the border crossing with Morocco is underway and steps have been taken to upgrade the city’s airport from category 2C to 3C, the statement said, which also stressed the urgency of taking measures to strengthen the role of the port of Melilla. This involves the implementation of new port activities that could contribute to boosting the local economic activity and add value to the port.
