Melilla's Economic Future Hinges on Morocco Ties, Experts Say

Melilla has no choice but to preserve its economic and trade relations with Morocco. This is at least what experts who have reflected on the economic model that this Spanish city should adopt claim.

The economic model of the city has been the subject of debate at a meeting entitled "Melilla Strategic Plan 2029" attended by university researchers, business leaders and the public authorities of the enclave, reports Les Inspirations Éco. Together, they discussed the integration of the European customs area and its consequences on neighborhood relations with Morocco.

This integration presents both advantages and disadvantages for the enclave. As disadvantages, we can cite among others the loss of the special tax status enjoyed by it, just like Ceuta; the loss of "fiscal autonomy", etc.

"If the ambition of the Moroccan authorities is to develop this eastern region, any change in the customs status of the enclave would be a source of tension with the Moroccan authorities," comments Maria Dolores Rodriguez Mejias, a consultant to the Canary Islands in charge of exporting companies. Other speakers stressed the urgency of reopening the commercial customs, as this measure would be wiser than joining the European customs area.

Experts are convinced that the future Nador-West Med port terminal will be successful and that the city is unable to cope with this new behemoth. Based on these findings, they advocate an economic model based on the attractiveness of companies dedicated to the technology and digital sectors. All the speakers agree that it is important for Melilla to preserve its economic and trade relations with the kingdom.
