Rabies Alert: Second Infected Dog Found at Melilla-Morocco Border

The competent authorities of Melilla reported on Saturday the discovery of a second rabid dog at the border with Morocco.
According to the department of social policies, this new case was diagnosed by the animal health and zoonosis unit. It is an adult medium-sized dog with short, black and white fur, spotted on April 8 in the beach area, near the border with Morocco, relays Ok Diario.
The animal, which showed symptoms of rabies, died the next day, April 9, informs the General Directorate of Public Health. After analyzing a sample taken on April 10, the National Center for Microbiology of the Carlos III Health Institute confirmed that the dog had rabies.
The health authorities invite anyone who has been bitten or in contact with the animal to report it immediately, insisting on the need to act quickly to avoid any contamination and reminding that "rabies, once the first symptoms appear, is a fatal disease for sensitive people and animals".
The Public Health Directorate also recommended avoiding any contact with stray or sick animals, touching or feeding them. It did not fail to remind that rabies vaccination is "mandatory and free" for dogs, cats and ferrets over three months old in Melilla.
