Melilla Businesses Face Crisis as Morocco Tightens Customs Restrictions

Merchants in the city of Melilla are crying out for asphyxiation. Heavily impacted by an embargo that dare not speak its name, operators will this time have to deal with a new measure introduced by the Moroccan customs.
For a few days now, goods originating from the Spanish enclave no longer benefit from the customs exemptions in force under the free trade agreements.
The new measure, which risks condemning the city’s exporters, could cost some 45 million euros to local businesses.
The EUR-1 document, which is no longer valid for products from the autonomous city, is a certificate of origin used for shipments of goods originating and manufactured in the European Union, in order to benefit from reduced, or even zero, customs duties.
