A Mega-Project of Ultra-Modern Buses Arrives in Tangier

The city of Tangier will benefit from a high-level bus service project (BHNS or Bus Rapid Transit - BRT) spanning 20 kilometers. This project is part of a national program supported by the World Bank to modernize urban transportation.

This project is integrated into a vast government plan valued at 18 billion dirhams. To support this momentum, the World Bank will unlock initial financing of 3.5 billion dirhams. Alongside Rabat and Marrakech, Tangier is a priority. The metropolitan area will thus develop lanes exclusively dedicated to these rapid buses in order to increase service frequency, shorten travel times, and guarantee better punctuality on the most congested routes.

This infrastructure has become essential in the face of economic changes and the city’s rapid urban expansion. Demand for mobility is exploding to efficiently connect residential neighborhoods to university, industrial, and commercial zones. This system will help relieve a city heavily dependent on private vehicles, particularly during peak hours. Beyond new lines, the program includes fleet renewal, the introduction of electronic ticketing, and the use of cutting-edge technologies for traffic monitoring.

This transportation policy anticipates Morocco’s rapidly accelerating urbanization. While 60% of citizens already live in cities, this rate is expected to exceed 70% by 2050. For Tangier, the implementation of this BRT network represents a strategic milestone. By ensuring balanced distribution of stops and seamless integration between various modes of transportation, the city hopes to support its economic growth while making its daily environment more breathable and sustainable.
