Tangier Explores Bus Rapid Transit to Ease Urban Congestion and Pollution

The city of Tangier is studying the feasibility of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT or high-level bus service) project, in order to facilitate urban mobility and reduce congestion in the city.
The city of Tangier wants to equip itself with a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to curb urban congestion and thus reduce daily rush hour traffic jams and air pollution. This BRT (or BHNS) project, under study by the Agency for the Promotion and Development of the North (APDN), aims to facilitate urban mobility for the inhabitants of the port city.
The city authorities recently launched a call for tenders valid until October 20, 2023 to recruit the company that will carry out this first phase of the project at a cost of 12 million dirhams (1 million euros). The call for tenders concerns in particular "the realization of the master plan of the dedicated public transport (TCSP) lines and the preliminary design studies (APS)" of the first BRT line in Tangier. 21 km long, it will connect the university hospital center (CHU) Mohammed VI to the Tanja El Balia industrial zone.
In addition, other urban development projects are underway in the city. This is the case of the "Cité Mohammed VI Tanger Tech" project, the work on which, launched in 2022, will be completed by 2033. Its realization has been entrusted to several companies including the Société d’aménagement Tanger Tech (SATT) and the Chinese company Beijing Zhonglu Urban Development Corporation. It aims to build residences, tourist parks, etc. and other infrastructure in the communes of Laaouma and Sebt Azzinate on a total area of 2,167 hectares.
