In Marrakech, foul odors ruin the lives of residents

Residents of several neighborhoods in Marrakech denounce daily waste fires that release foul odors and smoke, polluting their environment. Despite repeated alerts, no concrete solution has been provided by the competent authorities to this phenomenon.

Residents have expressed their frustration with this situation. Some have told Al3omk that these foul odors have become unbearable, especially for the elderly and those suffering from respiratory problems or allergies. "It is an injustice towards the residents and an attack on their health and dignity," they lament. This situation has forced some families to keep their windows always closed, even during hot periods, in order to avoid breathing these stifling fumes.

The regional coordinator of the National Human Rights Forum denounced the persistence of this phenomenon, stressing that these waste fires "constitute a blatant violation of the right to a healthy environment, guaranteed by international conventions and the Moroccan Constitution." The official points to the lack of environmental control and the absence of an effective waste management strategy at the local level.

The coordinator warns that "the continuation of such practices represents a real threat to the health and safety of citizens, especially the most vulnerable such as children, the elderly and the sick." He calls on the local authorities to "intervene urgently to put an end to this illegal act and open an investigation to determine the responsibilities and take the necessary measures."

In a letter addressed to the pasha, the Al Kawthar Housing Development and Solidarity Association, for its part, has urged the authorities to "intervene urgently" to end this "worrying" situation and to "identify and sanction the people involved in these irresponsible behaviors." It also calls for strengthened controls and safe alternatives for waste management, in order to preserve the health of citizens and their living environment.
