Casablanca: Start of the demolition of a slum near the Hassan II Mosque

The program to rehouse the inhabitants of the slums in affordable apartments, supervised by the authorities of the Casablanca-Settat region, is progressing normally. A slum located in the medina of the economic capital of the kingdom is currently being demolished.

It is the end of the long years of precarious and anarchic housing in the heart of Casablanca. On Tuesday, the authorities of the prefecture of the Anfa districts in Casablanca, more precisely those of the Sidi Belyout district, launched the demolition operation of the "karyane", near the Hassan II Mosque. The operation took place without incident or protest under the sad gaze of several residents. They had lived for many years in shacks and had founded their families there. Pending a permanent rehousing solution, the inhabitants of this slum have moved to temporary housing. Before this operation, the local authorities, supported by elements of the auxiliary forces, civil protection and security services, had proceeded to evacuate the still occupied dwellings.

This demolition is in line with the program to rehouse the inhabitants of the slums in affordable apartments, supervised by the authorities of the Casablanca-Settat region. It is implemented within the framework of a partnership agreement bringing together the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of National Land Use Planning, Housing, Urban Planning and City Policy, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Wilaya of the Casablanca-Settat region, the Casablanca-Settat Regional Council, the Casablanca Urban Agency, the Prefecture of Casablanca, the Prefectures and Provinces of Nouaceur, Médiouna and Mohammedia, the State Property Directorate and the company Casablanca Aménagement et Équipements. Financed to the tune of around 18.6 billion dirhams, this program concerns the rehousing of families living in the slums of the Prefecture of Casablanca, the Province of Nouaceur, the Province of Médiouna and the Prefecture of Mohammedia.
