Marrakech Cracks Down on Taxi Fare Fraud, Suspends 46 Licenses

Marrakech is on a crusade against the bad practices of taxi drivers who do not respect the current pricing. In total, nearly fifty licenses have been revoked.

Marrakech wants to put an end to the exorbitant prices charged by some petit taxi drivers in violation of the current pricing. The committee set up by the city in this case of taxi fare fraud has proceeded to withdraw 46 licenses. The duration of this withdrawal varies between one and two months.

This measure follows the case of the petit taxi driver who scammed the famous British YouTuber, named "Simon Wilson" by making him pay 400 DH for a transfer from Marrakech-Menara International Airport to Jamaa El-Fna Square when the transportation costs should normally be 70 DH. In an interview with SNRTNews, Maâti Alga, head of the Economic Affairs and Coordination Division of the Wilaya of the Marrakech-Safi region, explained that this case has prompted the city of Marrakech to set up monitoring committees.

The price set by the competent authorities for petit taxis for the transfer of Moroccan and foreign passengers to and from Marrakech Menara International Airport to all parts of the ochre city is 70 DH. If the trip is to continue to the Palmeraie, it would cost 100 DH. As for the grand taxis, the fare for a trip from the airport to the city center of Marrakech is set at 100 DH. The price can go up to 150 DH if the customer chooses to go to the Palmeraie.
