Marrakech Awarded $930,000 Grant for Municipal Governance Improvements

An excellence grant of 9.36 million DH is awarded to the municipality of Marrakech. It receives this financial support for its many efforts in the field of strengthening governance and improving services provided to citizens and users.

This Support Program for Improving the Performance of Municipalities in Morocco was set up in collaboration with the General Directorate of Local Authorities (DGCL), the World Bank and the French Development Agency (AFD). Planned for a duration of five years, it aims to strengthen the good governance of municipalities in order to improve services to citizens and businesses.

It also encourages the increase in the resilience of territories, the strengthening of their capacity to support economic recovery and local development, and the guarantee of continuity as well as the improvement of the quality of local public services. 103 municipalities representing more than 85% of the urban population of the country, and nearly 55% of its total population are concerned by this grant.

Marrakech ranks 4th in the ranking, far behind Casablanca which wins the lion’s share (12 million dirhams). It is followed by Fez (11 million dirhams), Tangier (9.50 million dirhams). Agadir brings up the rear with 4.57 million dirhams.

Among the criteria taken into account by the Support Program for Improving the Performance of Municipalities in Morocco for the granting of these grants, there are, among others, indicators and standards relating to the performance of municipalities in terms of administrative and financial management as well as in terms of the implementation of good governance mechanisms and good management.
