Marrakech Authorities Revoke Licenses of Restaurants Charging $500 for Tourist Dinners

Following the controversy sparked by the information that a dinner was served for 5,000 dirhams in restaurants in Marrakech, the authorities of the Wilaya of Marrakech-Safi have just withdrawn the operating license from two restaurants in this emblematic Jamaâ El Fna square, after the report filed by an investigation commission on this matter.

According to the daily Al Akhbar, these are the two premises whose owner had billed a dinner at 5,000 dirhams to a group of foreign tourists, at the beginning of the summer.

This incident has shocked more than one and forced the Wilaya to send an investigation commission on site. In its report which has just been submitted, the commission considers that the acts of the manager of these two restaurants represent a danger and harm the image and tourist reputation of the city, reports the same daily.

Far from stopping there, this joint commission, responsible for the repression of fraud, price control and the quality of food products in Marrakech, followed up with a series of sanctions against several street restaurants and fruit juice vendors operating in Jamaâ El Fna square.

Indeed, this affair of a 5,000 dirhams dinner also led the commission to issue 70 warnings to the various fast food points for non-compliance with hygiene conditions, food storage and the space allocated to them, as well as for unauthorized occupation of the public domain. These same restaurateurs have also been ordered by the said commission to improve the presentation and storage conditions of the food, notes the same source.

To recall, a group of fourteen Bulgarian tourists arrived in early June in Marrakech. After having dinner on the Jamaâ El Fna square, they were surprised by the amount that appeared on the bill presented to them by the restaurant manager at the end of the meal. It outraged them and they had cried foul, thus triggering an avalanche of reactions on social networks.
