Marrakech Authorities Face Backlash Over Controversial Stray Dog Culling Operation

The authorities of Marrakech have carried out, with the support of the health services, a large-scale operation to eliminate, by gunfire, stray dogs.
This news has been diversely appreciated by the inhabitants of the city. While some say they are relieved because of the danger posed by stray dogs in different neighborhoods of Marrakech, others are "deeply shocked" by the methods chosen to fight these animals by shooting them or poisoning them.
According to barlamane, human rights organizations have called for an end to these methods of fighting stray dogs. They denounced the use of firearms to kill these canines, as was the case recently in Bni Yakhlef near Mohammedia. They have also recommended resorting to sterilization of these animals in order to prevent their reproduction.
A year earlier, officials had promised to resort to "mass vaccinations" to deal with the phenomenon of stray dogs throughout Morocco.
