Marrakech Approves Underpasses to Ease Traffic for 2025 AFCON and 2030 World Cup

The Ministry of the Interior has finally yielded to the pressure of the Marrakech authorities, including the mayor of the city and the governor of the region, and approved the creation of underpasses in the ochre city in preparation for the 2025 AFCON and the 2030 World Cup.

The pleas of the Marrakech authorities to the Ministry of the Interior regarding the construction of underpasses have borne fruit. The department of Abdelouafi Laftit has finally authorized the realization of these infrastructures aimed at improving traffic flow in the city of Marrakech in the perspective of the 2025 AFCON and the 2030 World Cup, two sporting events that Morocco is preparing to host, reveal sources at Kech24.

The creation of these underpasses is part of the 2020-2027 development plan for the Marrakech-Safi region, which will be carried out with the financial support of the region, the municipal council and the Ministry of Transport and Equipment, the same sources detail, specifying that a total of seven underpasses will be built at several roundabouts in the ochre city.

An underpass will be created at the Ayachi roundabout, another connecting the Safi road at the level of the railway bridge, and a third at the ring road and the Essaouira road. The fourth underpass will be built in the center of the Gueliz district, at the intersection of Mohammed V Avenue and Abdelkrim El Khattabi Avenue, a fifth at the "16 Novembre" square at the intersection of Mohammed V Avenue and Hassan II Avenue, near the Moroccan Post Office. These underpasses will each cost 60 million dirhams.

The sixth underpass will be built at the Al Massira square at the intersection of Mohammed VI Avenue and Hassan II Avenue, near the train station, for a total estimated amount of 100 million dirhams. The seventh and last underpass, which was not planned in the 2022 program, will be built at the roundabout of the Marrakech Grand Stadium.
