Marrakech’s Traffic Woes Threaten Tourism as Morocco Prepares for Major Sporting Events

As Morocco prepares to host major sporting events such as the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2025) and the 2030 World Cup, which it will co-host with Spain and Portugal, Marrakech, a global tourist destination, faces a major challenge: urban mobility.
It is no longer easy to get around Marrakech due to massive traffic jams. There is severe congestion in its main arteries, such as Yaacoub El Mansour Avenue, Mohammed V Avenue, Hassan II Avenue, Zerktouni Avenue and Abdelkrim El Khattabi Avenue. This traffic congestion hinders the movement of visitors, making access to tourist monuments and major events difficult. A nightmare for residents and tourists. If nothing is done, traffic congestion could damage the image of Marrakech, one of the world’s main tourist destinations, and cause it to lose foreign exchange during the holding of major sporting events such as the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN Morocco 2025) and the 2030 World Cup.
Solutions to end traffic jams? It is urgent that the authorities develop effective plans and strategies and launch major projects and construction sites to widen roads and create traffic alternatives in order to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. These solutions will allow Marrakech to welcome its guests with fluidity and offer a unique tourist experience that meets the expectations of international visitors.
