Major Drug Bust: 1.5 Tons of Cannabis Seized on French Highway as Traffickers ’Destock’ Post-Lockdown

The customs officers of Poitiers in the Vienne arrested, on Thursday, May 14, a 48-year-old Spaniard, on the Poitiers-Chincé rest area on the A10 motorway in the South-North direction, during the control of a truck registered in Spain. The driver, who claimed to be transporting automotive spare parts, was actually transporting 1.5 tons of cannabis resin and herb.
It seems that the time has come for drug traffickers to destock in this period of deconfinement in France. In total, 1.5 tons of cannabis resin and herb were seized. "We are used to this type of seizure on the A10 motorway, which is a privileged axis for drug traffickers producing drugs in Morocco and transiting through Spain. But the quantities seized are considerable," a judicial source told France Info. "It seems that the traffickers have started to destock with the deconfinement," added a regular of this type of investigation.
After his arrest, the truck driver is in the hands of the Poitiers judicial police, who are conducting an investigation for unauthorized transport of narcotics. The market value of the seized goods is estimated at nearly 12 million euros.
The public prosecutor’s office of the specialized interregional jurisdiction (JIRS) of Rennes is now in charge of the case. The suspect will be prosecuted for drug trafficking in an organized gang, acquisition, transport, possession of drugs, participation in a criminal association, smuggling of goods dangerous to public health.
