EU Lawmaker Urges Action on Morocco’s Closure of Melilla Border Customs

Ciudadanos European MP Jordi Cañas has denounced Morocco before the European Commission for having closed the Melilla commercial customs office in Beni-Ensar for more than 2 years.
"Two years ago, Morocco unilaterally decided, under the pretext of the health crisis related to Covid-19, to close the land borders with the two Spanish autonomous cities, in order to strangle the two enclaves economically," denounced Jordi Cañas, who has addressed a written question to the European Commission asking it to work for the reopening of the Melilla commercial customs office.

The MEP points out that more than a month after the reopening of the borders on May 17, Morocco still does not allow the traffic of goods through this commercial customs office, which was closed on August 1, 2018, after more than six decades of activity. For Cañas, the closure of these customs offices could violate the EU-Morocco association agreement.
