Korean TV Show Sparks Controversy Over Cultural Clash in Morocco

The filming of an episode of the cooking TV series "CEO Baek" by famous South Korean chef Baek Jong Won took place in Morocco. But it soon sparked a debate on racism and mockery between Moroccans and Koreans.

In Morocco, the production team set up a stand in a night market. The show attracted a huge crowd. On the menu: bulgogi, bulgogi hamburgers and galbitang, beef meat. No pork of course. While the show was going well and the service was going normally, the light suddenly went out, reports the site koreaboo.com. The director tried to operate the switches to turn the light back on. Without success. The tent remained in the dark, as if the electricity had been cut off.

Ahmed, a Moroccan hired part-time by the team to help them on their trip, immediately charges BamBam to convey a message to Chef Baek Jong Won: "Listen. Tell the chef that we’re done. We don’t have to serve people anymore. [They didn’t say anything. There’s a problem. I don’t know why. That’s what they just told me. We have to stop serving people."] Ahmed insists again. According to his explanations, the night market authorities said that Chef Baek Jong Won’s team was not allowed to continue serving. Only customers whose orders had been recorded were subsequently served.

The team documented the difficulties encountered in the context of this episode of the series. In a video, a Moroccan who expressed doubts about the food and asked what it was. In response, Ahmed had explained to him that it was beef. Later, the Moroccan was recorded saying, "Can we eat that? They say these people (the Koreans) eat frogs!" Enough to spark a debate between Koreans and Moroccans.

Some Koreans accused the local night authorities of having closed the tent simply because it was doing better than the local stalls. They refer to a manifestation of racism. Others, on the other hand, reproach the production team for its lack of perspicacity.
