King Mohammed VI’s Summer Plans: Royal Retreats in Northern Morocco

For several years now, Mohammed VI has preferred to spend his summer vacation in the North, in the palace of Tangier, or in the villa of Lalla Fatima Zohra, his paternal grandmother, located in M’diq. Where will the monarch choose to spend his vacation this summer?
For many years, the sovereign has spent all his summers in the north of the kingdom, between Tangier, Tetouan, M’diq and Al Hoceima. He has organized several festivities at the Marchane Palace in Tangier, or at the royal palace of Tetouan, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mohammed VI has a fondness for the North because he is a lover of the Mediterranean and water sports, especially jet skiing, recalls Jeune Afrique.
The monarch is also fond of the villa of Lalla Fatima Zohra, his paternal grandmother (who died in 2014), located in M’diq, between the Sofitel and other private residences. It is a cozy and discreet house that the monarch has remodeled to his liking, with direct access to a private beach. But since the Covid-19 health crisis, Mohammed VI has been rare in the region. Last year, M’diq had prepared to welcome him, but the sovereign did not show up.
However, the king’s interest in the North remains. He is about to open soon in M’diq the Royal Mansour Tamuda Bay, his new luxury hotel, owned by the Siger holding company. Before the health crisis, he was considering transforming the Palais Moulay El Mehdi in Tangier into a sports complex, the management of which he should entrust to the Moroccan-German Abu Azaitar, world kickboxing champion.
