King Mohammed VI Inspects $30 Million Restoration of Essaouira’s Historic Medina

King Mohammed VI was in Essaouira’s medina on Wednesday. He went to see the progress of the rehabilitation and enhancement work on the old medina, which has been mobilizing the tidy sum of 300 million dirhams since 2019.
Mohammed VI’s visit is giving impetus to the 13,000 artisans who work day and night to rehabilitate the medina. It also testifies to the king’s determination to preserve the architectural character of the city of Mogador, to promote its cultural and tourist influence, and to improve the living and working conditions of its inhabitants.
The rehabilitation focuses on 26 projects that revolve around the rehabilitation of the urban space, the restoration and enhancement of the historical heritage, the promotion of access to social services and the strengthening of the tourist and economic attractiveness of the old medina of Essaouira.
During his visit, Mohammed VI was able to see that four projects included in this program are under construction and seven are in the launch phase. Similarly, fifteen projects are in the study phase. This is a new generation program, which is the result of a partnership between the Hassan II Fund for Economic and Social Development and several ministries as well as the Marrakech-Safi Regional Council, the Essaouira Municipal Council and the Al-Omrane Group.
The complementary program for the rehabilitation of the old medina of Essaouira 2019-2023 is part of the efforts made to preserve and enhance the old medinas in several cities of the Kingdom such as Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Fez, Meknes, Salé and Tetouan.
