King Mohammed VI’s Inner Circle: The Power Players Shaping Morocco’s Monarchy

The magazine Jeune Afrique has devoted a special report to the influential men in the shadow of King Mohammed VI. An investigation into the network of the main personalities surrounding the King and who constitute the basic pillars in the functioning of the monarchy.
Shadow of the Sovereign and trusted man, Fouad Ali Himma is a childhood friend who was appointed Secretary of State to the Ministry of the Interior upon the King’s accession. Promoted to Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Interior between 2002 and 2007, Ali Himma became the Sovereign’s closest collaborator before joining the Royal Cabinet in 2011 as Personal Advisor.
Former Finance Minister under King Hassan II, Driss Jettou was appointed Interior Minister by Mohammed VI then technocratic Prime Minister, before leaving the post for the presidency of the High Court of Auditors.
Another influential man and friend of the King, the current Minister of Agriculture, Aziz Akhannouch, was ranked by the magazine among the few trusted men who have been able to give a boost to the agricultural sector. He is tipped for the post of Head of Government.
The magazine considers Abdellatif Hammouchi as the contemporary man who perfectly embodies the principles of the new generation. In keeping with his personality, he quickly embodied the responsibilities that require discretion and professional secrecy. A trusted man of the Sovereign, the head of the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) was entrusted with the Directorate of Territorial Security, to which he gave an international dimension.
Former classmate of King Mohammed VI, Yassine El Mansouri took over the leadership of the Moroccan Press Agency (MAP) before being entrusted with the Directorate General of Studies and Documentation (DGED).
