Kénitra COVID-19 Outbreak Prompts Possible Lockdown as Cases Surge

Following the appearance last Sunday in the Oulad Oujih district of Kénitra of some 60 confirmed cases of Covid-19 contamination, the authorities have taken new measures to curb the pandemic and raise awareness in certain neighborhoods of the city to the danger. The capital of Gharb could even be prohibited from movement and activity from 4 p.m.
With legal businesses, street vendors and other ferrachas illegally occupying public space, the already overcrowded Oulad Oujih district attracts crowds daily. This significant mixing is a source of mass contamination. The daily Al Akhbar reports that in the face of this situation, the authorities have decided to raise awareness on site, on compliance with health measures, particularly social distancing.
In this sense, it has been decided to close all businesses and cafes-restaurants in this district from 9 p.m. This schedule could be brought forward to 4 p.m. in the event of the discovery of new contaminations. Indeed, the contacts of the 60 people detected last Sunday, some 300 individuals, are currently undergoing Covid-19 tests.
The local authorities have already cordoned off the entrances to several working-class neighborhoods, following the discovery of many pockets of contamination within the local population, the same source reports. The capital of Gharb, spared for several months by the pandemic, has experienced an unprecedented explosion of infections in recent weeks. A situation that has led the local authorities to impose the generalized wearing of masks on the public highway and in public places, under penalty of a hefty fine.
