Jakob Ingebrigtsen Sets Record, Mechaal Takes Silver in European Indoor 3,000m

The Spanish-Moroccan Adel Mechaal won the silver medal in the 3,000 meters event at the European indoor athletics championships in Istanbul on Sunday. Norwegian favorite Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the race, setting a new national record with a time of 7 minutes, 40 seconds and 32 hundredths.
Mechaal finished the race in 7 minutes and 41.75 seconds, thus winning his third medal in the event, after winning the 3,000 meters title at the 2017 European Championships in Belgrade and a bronze medal at the previous European indoor championships. Mechaal had improved his performance in this edition and thus obtained the silver medal, ahead of Serb Elzan Bibic who won the bronze medal with a time of 7:44.03.

Olympic 1,500 meters champion Ingebrigtsen had already won the 1,500 meters title on Friday, thus achieving the double he had already won at the previous European indoor championships in Torun, Poland.
Adel Mechaal also has a silver medal in the 5,000 meters at the 2016 European outdoor championships in his record. Born in Morocco, he chose to run under the Spanish colors and has become over the years one of the best athletes in the country along with another Moroccan Mohamed Katir.
