Israeli Firm Mehadrin Launches $8 Million Avocado Venture in Morocco

In partnership with a Moroccan company, the Israeli company Mehadrin will produce avocado on Moroccan soil in order to meet the growing demand for this nutritious and highly profitable fruit.
This is the first time the Israeli company will produce and export from foreign territory. According to the partnership agreement signed by the two parties, the project, worth 80 million dirhams, will be realized on a leased domain of 455 ha.
The estimated maximum annual production of the plantation is around 10,000 tons of avocados, representing a quarter of Mehadrin’s production, and will be sold mainly in Europe, except for the fruits unfit for export, which will be sold locally in the Kingdom.
"Morocco is a country with good growing conditions and with much lower costs than Israel. It is also a little closer to our main markets in Europe," said Shaul Shelach, CEO of Mehadrin, who holds 51% of the shares in the new operation.
