Islamophobic Graffiti Targets Religious Sites in Rennes, France

Tuesday 16 April 2019, by Said

Among the inscriptions discovered: "88 Nic the Mus", a smiley with the inscription "Go Home" and a third tag with the symbols of the three monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) under which one can read: "No thank you".

According to AFP, these tags were discovered by Muslim worshippers and officials on Monday morning and work was already underway yesterday afternoon (after the police report) to erase them.

"The tags simultaneously targeted three places of worship in a department not used to hateful inscriptions against Muslims, and are related to the context of the upcoming European elections," explains the president of the National Observatory against Islamophobia (ONCI) and delegate of the French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) Abdallah Zekri.

"I’m used to it, I’ve been in this position for eight years. Every time elections are approaching, the ills of France come from Islam and Muslims," he lamented, calling on Muslims in France, as the month of Ramadan approaches, to go in large numbers to mosques in France, and on the authorities to ensure the security of places of worship.
