Inflation Surge Hits Moroccan Beach Towns as Tourist Influx Drives Prices Skyward

The large influx of tourists in the northern cities during this summer period is a boon for some people who take advantage of it to significantly increase prices, in the total absence of control by the authorities.

Moroccan summer vacationers are struggling to enjoy this vacation period in northern Morocco. Already faced with this large influx in this region, they are bearing the brunt of inflation.

According to Le360.ma, citing the newspaper Al Akhbar, the cities of Tétouan, Martil, M’diq and Fnideq have experienced a sharp rise in prices in recent days. This is the result of the influence of certain lobbies who want to take advantage of the large influx these cities are experiencing to make significant profits, in the absence of any control by the authorities.

This is what justifies the strong pressure on everyday consumer products, housing and other commodities.

Added to this is the increase in parking prices by car guards in the cities of M’diq and Fnideq. Thus, daytime parking prices have gone up to 10 dirhams, instead of the 5 provided for in the specifications set up by the local authorities. Public transport, in particular large taxis, have also increased. Those connecting Tétouan to Martil now charge a fare of 10 dirhams per person and per trip, instead of the usual 5. Not to mention the cafes, restaurants and other businesses that take advantage of the influx of summer vacationers.

Faced with this inflation, the competent authorities, instead of playing their role, turn a deaf ear, thus allowing operators to dictate their own laws to the detriment of those of the citizen, according to the newspaper.
