Drowning Crisis in Morocco: Lack of Public Pools Drives Children to Dangerous Rivers

While the summer period is known to be the time of year when there is an increase in the number of drownings in Morocco, it should also be noted that, due to the lack of neighborhood swimming pools, many children drown in rivers.
According to Le360, at least 53 people lost their lives this summer on Moroccan beaches. According to figures from the General Directorate of Civil Protection, 8,099 people were rescued, while 7 others are still missing. A toll that is likely to worsen due to the large influx of vacationers during the month of August.
What is even more worrying is the number of young people who lose their lives in the rivers of the Kingdom every day, according to Al Massae. The Arabic-language daily mentions the case of four young boys who drowned in the Oum Rabie river in the past ten days. In addition, the newspaper reported two new drowning cases last weekend in Oued Takoucht in the province of Chtouka Aït Baha.
According to the daily, these drowning cases, in addition to the tragedy observed on the beaches, are explained by the lack of neighborhood swimming pools. Local authorities are called upon to remedy this lack in order to put an end to this situation.
