39.6 % in Morocco, 2.1 % in Algeria: the huge renewable energy gap

This finding comes from IRENA’s Renewable Capacity Statistics 2026 report, which compares installed capacities at the end of 2025. The ratio between the two countries is precisely 18.9.

This proportion does not correspond to the share of renewables in the electricity actually generated. It measures their share of total installed capacity, the indicator also used for the Moroccan target of 52 % renewables.

In absolute terms, Morocco has a total of 4851 MW of renewable capacity, compared with 601 MW in Algeria. The gap is therefore eightfold. In 2016, the two countries had 2417 and 500 MW respectively: over nine years, Morocco doubled its capacity, while Algeria’s increased by only around 20 %.

In wind power, the gap reaches 245 times

The difference is most striking in wind power. IRENA records 2452 MW in Morocco at the end of 2025, compared with only 10 MW in Algeria, or approximately 245 times more. Wind power already occupies an important place in Morocco’s electricity system, while the Kingdom still has significant offshore wind potential.

In solar power, the gap is smaller but remains greater than twofold: 1086 MW of capacity in Morocco compared with 462 MW in Algeria.

The trajectory over nine years further accentuates the contrast. In 2016, renewables accounted for 28.9 % of installed electricity capacity in Morocco and 2.5 % in Algeria. At the end of 2025, Morocco had risen to 39.6 %, while Algeria’s share had fallen to 2.1 %. The African average now stands at 29.2 %.

The “nearly 19 times higher” figure therefore does not concern the amount of green electricity produced, but the place occupied by renewables in each of the two electricity generation fleets. On this comparable criterion, Morocco has moved clearly above the African average, while Algeria remains around 2 %.
