Morocco Boosts Wind Power, Surpassing Natural Gas in Electricity Production

With a production share exceeding that of natural gas production, wind power is now the second largest source of electricity production in Morocco. The kingdom is thus affirming its determination to find an alternative to Algerian gas.
In a note summarizing its achievements for the year 2021, the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) states that the contribution of renewable energies in meeting demand is becoming increasingly important, with a share of 4.5% for solar production (up 20% compared to 2020) and 12.4% for wind production (up 11% compared to 2020). Thus, the share of wind power production now exceeds the share of natural gas production (8.5%). Wind power is now the second largest source of electricity production in Morocco.
The coal-fired power plants used to ensure the security of the electricity system provide the electricity production responding to the base load. "These plants, which contribute 68.5% of national production, make it possible to cope with the variability of hydroelectric production and the decline in production based on natural gas, while awaiting the commissioning of the planned or ongoing renewable energy projects," notes ONEE.
