Illegal Industrial Zones Surge in Casablanca, Fueling Informal Economy

In Casablanca, clandestine factories are multiplying in the vicinity of urban areas, thus leading to the development of real industrial zones dedicated to the informal sector. The complicity of some authority agents is to blame.
The informal economy is growing around Casablanca, where clandestine industrial zones are proliferating. The initial conclusions of the investigation conducted by the authorities on clandestine production units show that in Nouaceur, significant investments are being made in warehouses with high rental costs, which are intended to house clandestine activities, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. The investigation also revealed a series of malfunctions and frauds related to the registration of employees of these units on the CNSS registers. This includes the registration of employees as owners of production units that house about twenty employees. Authority agents would be accomplices to the proliferation of these clandestine units.
The phenomenon is worrying deputy Mohamed Ghiate, head of the parliamentary group of the Rassemblement national des indépendants (RNI). In an oral question to the Minister of the Interior, he drew the latter’s attention to the clandestine development of industrial zones and warehouses in the Mediouna region. The elected official called for urgent intervention to eradicate this phenomenon that undermines the national economy.
