Al Hoceima Aims to Become Morocco's Premier Beach Tourism Destination

The city of Al Hoceima has big ambitions in the tourism sector. The goal is now to regain its domestic and international clientele, which flows in during the holidays, to raise the province to the rank of the best destinations in Morocco.

The province has various assets to become a top tourist destination at the national level, reports L’Economiste, citing the campsites and huts of the Club Med. The beauty of the region and its beaches make it a choice seaside destination. This is the case of the undisputed star, the Quemado beach, a real showcase of the city or that of Sfiha.

Speaking at a work-shop organized by the Morocco Travel Management (MTM) club, Abdelali Rahmani, delegate of the Ministry of Tourism in Al Hoceima, indicated that despite Covid-19, the number of overnight stays as of the end of September last year had seen a spectacular increase from 46,000 to nearly 86,000, or almost 100%.

In addition, the city has several projects that can help it achieve its ambitions. Rahmani cites, among others: the restoration of several historic monuments and the establishment of a marina, the opening of a theater-music conservatory and even an Olympic pool and finally the opening of an ecomuseum and aquarium. All these projects will be completed before the summer of 2022, he assured.

For his part, Mohamed Azerkane, head of the Al Hoceima Regional Investment Center (CRI), said that "business tourism should also develop in the coming years, thanks to the installation of several industries in the Ait Kamra industrial zone", noting however the problem of connectivity that the city is experiencing.

As for road infrastructure, the authorities have started important road connection work between Al Hoceima and the cities of Tangier and Fez. Air travel remains on the sidelines. A direct connection with Tangier has just been announced, it will boost the region and open up Al Hoceima while allowing combined products in the North.
