Historic Fez Undergoes Royal-Led Revival, Boosting Tourism and Heritage

To restore the imperial city’s former appeal and prestige. This explains the multitude of projects initiated towards the Idrisside city to make it a destination of national heritage, in all its forms. The aim is to transform Fez into a center of influence and attraction, capable of attracting tourists from all over the world. Visitors are indeed always seduced by the changes in the various alleys of the old medina of Fez, the most recent of which is the "Lalla Ydouna" square, which has become one of the jewels of the historical sites of Morocco.

These large-scale projects have managed, in a short time, to transform the urban aspect of the old medina of Fez, a millennium-old city and a model of coexistence, intercultural mixing and living together. Moreover, the internationally renowned gallery of Moulay Idriss has also been renovated, as well as a number of schools and Fondouks dating back several centuries, now transformed into lively museums, to become eternal witnesses to the creative genius of the Moroccan craftsman.

Rehabilitation work began last April, after the launch by King Mohammed VI, for the rehabilitation of 32 sites out of the 113 concerned, thanks to the complementary program for the enhancement of the old medina of Fez. Added to this are the two major programs, for financing exceeding one billion dirhams. These two programs take into account the enhancement of the Fez medina and the development of parking lots, the rehabilitation of public spaces and the installation of an information system.
